Not too long ago I photographed her as a newborn...

Here she is now big stuff at 6 months. I LOVE this age. Typically I tell my clients to not go by the age to get their photographs done (during that first year), go by the milestones. When they can sit, there are so many possibilities!

A couple of weeks ago I met up with this sweet couple and their new baby boy. Lindsey and I went to high school together (though she is a few years behind me) and I heard her story through mutual friends. The have been on quite the journey and you can read all about it HERE. Lindsey also happened to be Trey's nurse when he was in ICU right after he was born and when he got diagnosed with meningitis.

Thanks to those that have donated! I didn't make my personal goal but collectively as a team we well surpassed what we were supposed to raise. Team Lola ended up raising $25,412.80.

Hi {Grand Rapids Children's Photographer}

I'm still here! I've been super busy finishing up the last of my scheduled sessions for the year and continuing to paint, paint and more painting happening in my house.

I had the opportunity to photograph these beautiful girls not too long ago. SOO sweet and full of personality!

A lot has been going on in our household. As you know, Joe and I are completely updating the house we just purchased and it's starting to feel like home! The kitchen is about 95% done, all I need to do is grout the backsplash and glaze the cabinets. I can't wait to share photos! My goal is to have everything done before Christmas, so we are working 'till the wee hours to get this house completed!

Adoption news... crickets still. We've been waiting for almost 8 months now and every day I hold my breath in anticipation thinking today may be the day. We are so ready to meet our child!

Tomorrow will be the day where I announce the winners for my CureSearch donation contest!

We're still deep in the heart of redoing our house. The kitchen is about 95% complete and demolition on the basement is well underway. I can't wait to share the transformations!!

I was back in the studio after a long time this fall photographing families outside. It felt so good to get back into my cozy studio! I just love photographing these girls. More to come from their session!

You've heard me talk about the DeYoung's a lot on this blog. You've also heard me talk about my hike that I was training for. We did it, it's done and I'm so thankful that it went well!

Lola DeYoung is 5 years old. She loves the color pink, bible stories and horses. On February 14, 2011 Lola was diagnosed with Leukemia. Every day, 35 children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer - 7 of those will not survive. Cancer is the #1 cause of death by disease in children. Although the cure rate is now 78%, it is not good enough. Our goal is 100%. On October 29, 2011, 8 women from Team Lola set out to the Tecumseh Trail for a 30 mile hike that is helping raise money for CureSearch, a research company helping make a difference in the lives of children with cancer.

I have a little fundraising to do yet and I thought I'd get creative and come up with a fun way to get me to my goal. Here's how it's going to work.

Been Working.... A Lot. {Grand Rapids Photographer}

As you all know we've moved into the "new" (to us) house recently. I am desperate to have this house completed with my vision by Christmas. I want to be able to relax and enjoy the holiday's with my kids not looking around at all the things that need to be done. The first week we moved in, I started on the teeny, tiny master bathroom and pained the cupboards. I mentioned my new passion back at the end of this post. Don't they look great? I am addicted to refinishing furniture, including cupboards. It was done with spray paint and I went over it with a glaze. The room still isn't complete but I definitely can live with it for now until I get some other major rooms completed. I've now completed the living room and I'm almost done with the kitchen. Next up is the basement. I'll definitely share pictures soon. I've also done a ton of sessions this fall so it's been a crazy few weeks!

The move is OVER! Boxes are still everywhere and the house is total chaos but we're in, we have food in the fridge, and life is good! I'm anxious to get this house to feel like mine so I've been painting away. One room and a door painted already and I've also refinished the bathroom cabinets. I can't wait to show you my painting skills!! With fall being my busiest time of year regarding photography (this year no exception!), and moving this month, I'm exhausted!

Trey - The Latest

It's been a LONG time since I last updated you on how Trey has been doing. My last post on him was here. Since then his vocabulary has EXPLODED! This is a huge thing for us as now our communication back and forth is not so frustrating, resulting in less temper tantrums from both of us. ;) It is a wonderful thing to hear his sweet little voice and to know his wants and what he's thinking; something we've waited for so long to hear.

Last year he went to Ken-o-sha for 5 half days and learned so many new things. He now knows all his colors, and most letters. Absolutely unbelievable for a pretty non-verbal kid at the beginning of the year. His sensory limitations have come a long way too. Trey is a SUPER sensory sensitive kid when it comes to touch. He doesn't mind being touched, it's when he is challenged to touch something is when it becomes a problem. When he's in a baby swing at the park, he doesn't hold onto the handles for fear of how they feel. He won't hold a toothbrush, or an unfamiliar item. This has become a huge challenge for Joe and I as we can't cater to his every need by feeding him or brushing his teeth for him forever (especially with child #4 coming soon).

Last night we had a huge breakthrough and we are SOOO excited about his progress!! Look here, not only is he holding the spoon, he's feeding himself too! We've waited for this for 4 years!!!

I had the pleasure of photographing this sweet little buddy not too long ago. Sigh.... he was SO sweet!

Ok so things have been CRAZY over here in the Siereveld household. Remember how I moved into our new house back in July?!? Well it just so happens that we are moving again in 2 weeks as that house has now sold. Such is the life of a builders wife...

Our house technically wasn't for sale but as my husband would say, anything is for sale. So sure enough, boxes are being packed up again (I didn't even really decorate this house or completely unpack!), and we are on the move again. This time though, instead of renting, we've purchased an old, adorable house that the kids and the dog can live in for a bit. We're so excited and I can't wait to transform this beauty into something beautiful! It's got so much character and potential!

Speaking of transformations, I've got something up my sleeve. A new project that really doesn't have anything do to with photography but it's something I've discovered I love doing.... stay tuned.

A few of weeks ago I held mini sessions and this is one of the families that participated. Aren't they all cute??? I love me some color (lots of it!), but I really liked these in black and white.

Just a note for the rest of the year. I'm 110% completely booked through October. However, if you have a newborn, I do have some mornings open that I can fit you in. If you're expecting and are wanting to schedule something with me, let me know ASAP so I can fit you in my day schedule. I don't have any more family sessions open until November and I'm only offering a limited amount in November and December as I want to appreciate the holidays with my family as much as I can.

A couple of weeks ago I shot the most beautiful wedding up near Traverse City, Michigan. STUNNING weather we had and even though it was a little bit hot, it wasn't raining and we were able to utilize this amazing property at the Crooked Creek Ranch. When I say amazing, I mean absolutely amazing. The grounds at the ranch offered so much for photography backdrops, it was a little overwhelming on where to start as I wanted to do so much with this wedding party!

I wrote about my dear friend Lindsey and her sweet daughter here, when they had recently found out that Lola had been diagnosed with Leukemia. Ever since then Lola has fighting like a trooper for her life.

Lindsey informed me that there was a hike raising money for CureSearch, a critical piece in Lola's recovery. They help fund those searching for a cure for pediatric cancer.

So I hike.

30 miles in one day.

I told you...

I'm crazy. And so is Lindsey. :)

What's great about CureSearch is that out of every dollar, more than 90% of that goes directly to research a cure for children's cancer.

Here's the deal. I'm hiking for Lola and I'm helping the DeYoung family raise money for an organization that could potentially help save their daughters life. I challenge you to help me raise my goal for them.

Wedding day! {Grand Rapids Photographer}

FINALLY! I've been without internet for the past 2 weeks with the occasional unreliable WIFI hookup from my husbands phone. July has been an EXTREMELY busy month for me. We've moved into our new house (blog post on that coming in a few weeks) so that has kept us on our toes these past couple of weeks. This poor bride. I photographed her wedding the week before we moved so I didn't have time to put her blog post up when we still had our internet at our rental. This sweet couple got married July 1 at the Felt Mansion, a beautiful estate in Saugatuck, Michigan. Driving to Saugatuck that morning I thought I was going to need a boat to get there with how much rain was coming down. It was darker than dark and it was so hard to see through the rain. I've never been to the mansion before so when I drove up, I was sooo sad to see how beautiful the property was and how we weren't going to be able to use it their wedding day. Turns out, as soon as the bride was ready and it was time to start pictures, the heavens opened and God heard my prayer - the rain had stopped! The rest of the day we enjoyed the grounds and we were able to get lots of outside pictures. Congratulations Andy and Tracy!

I normally don't shoot extended families but I thought I'd try my hand out on this gorgeous group. They were so. much. fun!! This sweet family hasn't been together in 3 years as they are spread all over the country. Since they were going to be in one spot all at the same time, they wanted to capture this moment as one big family. I'm so glad they did and that they hired me to document this moment. I've decided that I don't mind photographing an extended family and if you're wanting the non-traditional type of family photographs, I'm your girl. :)

This post is probably the most random post I've ever written but I feel like I need to share with the world this completely fantastic product! Because I hardly sleep (my mind is always going a mile a minute, and I have kids just don't let me sleep), I find that I always have under eye circles that aren't very attractive. I haven't found a product that helps with that until........ wahlaa..... Revlon Photo Ready concealer. For real, it's fantastic and it looks like I got a full 8 hours of sleep the night before. You must get some. Now.

Other news. Our Dossier has left Washington and is on it's way to Ethiopia!!! Woop! We are getting SOOO close to being on that coveted waiting list. Once it is received in Ethiopia, they need to translate it and authenticate it then... it's waiting list time baby! So excited and so ready to meet our new little person!

I had two little peanuts in my studio the other day and boy were they little! Born 8 weeks early, they were in the NICU for about a month and were 6 weeks old when I had the pleasure to photograph them. Little miss liked being photographed much more than mr. man did.

It was so sweet that when I laid her next to her brother she would instantly smile! How fun to see the bond between the two!

You've seen this cute bunch of kids on my blog before, aren't they just adorable? I've photographed them over the past couple of years and I just can't believe how big they're getting!!

I just love how this sweet little tootsie will let her mama do her hair all pretty with all those curls and cute headbands. Rylee won't let me do her hair in my definition of cute anymore, it's all about her ideas. You should see how her hair looks today, it's um.... interesting.

What I've been up to....

Since October when Joe and I first started the adoption process, we've been keeping busy with case worker appointments, and paper chasing - trying to finish up the dossier (the main set of paperwork that goes to Ethiopia to start the referral process). Finally, FINALLY we've finished up our dossier! It involves a lot of running around, appointments and money. Thankfully we were able to complete it without too much stress and hand it in to our agency last week. Currently it's being reviewed by the international adoption team at our agency and hopefully they don't find anything we need redone and then they can ship it overseas to Africa!! We are just so excited to add a new member to our family!

In late February me and my family have moved into a teeny, tiny rental home until the house we are building is complete - I'm hoping July. We are pretty much moved in but there are definitely boxes we still need to go through.

Between moving and the adoption paperwork, it's been an extremely busy few months! I'm currently limiting my sessions to 4 a month so please contact me early if you would like to set up a session. I'm still booking a few for April so you can email me if you would like book.

Hello! {Grand Rapids Photographer}

If I were to describe life in a nutshell at the moment it would be "insane". Joe and I sold our house a couple of months ago and we are creeping up on closing time so we are planning on moving out this weekend. These past few weeks have been focused on packing, packing, and more packing!! We are planning on moving into a rental home until our new house will be completed which hopefully will be early Summer.

Paperwork for our adoption is almost complete! We had our fingerprint appointments the other week so we are waiting on clearance from those then our big pack of papers will be on it's way to Ethiopia!!! I'm just so excited to get on that waiting list I can hardly stand it. :)

Do you remember seeing her newborn pictures I took about 7 months ago? You can't miss her with all that hair!!

Here's one of my favorites from a 3 month session.

Remember my friends Matt and Lindsey DeYoung? If you haven't heard already we're asking for many prayers for their family. The DeYoung family set out for Tanzania, Africa in October to become missionaries. They took their sweet daughters Kia (4) and Lola (5) with them on this great adventure. Soon after they arrived in Africa Lola became sick and was progressively getting worse. Fast forward to February 12 when after the DeYoungs mission team sent them back to the US on an impromptu flight to seek treatment for their little Lola, they found themselves at the Helen Devos Children's Hospital where on Valentines Day Lola was diagnosed with Leukemia. Because they were only expecting to stay in the US for maybe a couple of weeks, the DeYoungs left almost all of what they had over in Africa and we're asking for your help. Embracing Winter

I'm trying my hardest to remind myself that Winter is only temporary. I still think though that winter lasts WAAAAY too long. :)

I've been super busy over the past 2 months. Joe and I have sold our house (yea!) and are about to move out in a couple weeks to a rental until our next house is completed.

Adoption news.... Joe and I had our fingerprint appointment this past Wednesday and are sooo close to handing in our Dossier (the big pack of paperwork that gets us on the waiting list)!!

Tanzania Baby Shower - UPDATE {Grand Rapids Photographer}

A couple of weeks ago I wrote this post about my friend Lindsey and her need for supplies for the orphanage in Tanzania. I asked and you provided. Thank you, thank you, thank you for those that stopped by to donate the items needed and for those of you that gave a monetary donation. This truly will be such a blessing to those sweet little children over there that are living in that orphanage. I know Lindsey is so grateful too.

I've received huge bags of clothing full of wipes, diapers, outfits, lotion, diaper cream, blankets etc. To date total we've raised $405 to give to the orphanage which they will use to purchase formula and food for those children. Thank you!!!

Not Your Typical Baby Shower {Grand Rapids Photographer}

Remember my good photographer friend turned missionary, Lindsey? About a year ago I did a little fund raiser to help them raise enough money to get to Tanzania, Africa. They raised the money and this past October they packed their bags and with a one way ticket in hand, headed to Tanzania! (Matt & Lindsey were also the people that completely inspired Joe and I to adopt. We will be forever grateful to them!)

It's been amazing to follow their journey through their Facebook pages and through their website.

Matt, Lindsey and the girls finally have finished language school and are now living at the house they will be in for the rest of their time in Tanzania. One of the things in Lindsey's job description is to help in the orphanages. Since Lindsey has been there, she has seen a great need for some specific items and is asking for help. The orphanage is in desperate need of the following items:

- Small disposable diapers. Newborn and premie sizes.

-Baby wipes. Perfume free.

-Diaper cream.

-Newborn and preemie clothes. Specifically sleepers and onsies. Tanzania does get cold at times so also needed is warm sleepers and long sleeved onsies. Because they do the laundry in the river, white clothing may not be the best but obviously they will take anything they can. Clothing does not need to be new.

-Gowns for newborns. Makes diaper changing a bit easier with all those babies.

-Cloth diapers.

-Plastic cloth diaper covers.

-Receiving blankets.

-A big thing the orphanage needs is money. In Tanzania they have the capability to purchase formula but the funds just aren't there. The orphanage also tries to feed the kids but seeing how underfunded they are, most days kids will eat corn mash, cabbage or some type of green.

Here's where I know we can help. We have only until February 1 folks. Lindsey has some guests flying out to Tanzania and those flying out will be taking the supplies to the orphanage. Hand delivered to Tanzania all the way from Michigan. Let's shower Tanzania's precious children with these basic supplies that we so take for granted.

Merry Christmas! {Grand Rapids Photographer}

Merry Christmas! It's been an eventful week in the Siereveld household. Gibson has been terribly sick all week with times that I thought he was turning the corner and getting better but the past few days he's gotten worse. I ended up taking him to the med center late last night and we walked out with the diagnosis of Strep Throat. Poor little guy. He said on the way home that the best present would be for him to feel better. Today is a better day and he's definitely perked up some and he's enjoyed playing with his Christmas gifts.

The adoption process has been very slow going. I've been trying to be patient but it's so hard knowing that our child is living over in Africa at this very moment.

Here's the kiddos. We are hoping that one more picture of the 4th child will be added by this time next year. :)

This time of year is always busy for me with sessions, school, holidays etc...

I've also been busy with adoption paperwork and moving into the new studio. Ohhhhhhh.... did I forget to mention that?? :) As of 2 weeks ago, Images of Essence is no longer home based but now located in it's own studio. WOOP! Almost all moved in and ready to go for a studio session. With a few things left to hang, I'll be all set!

Annnnnnd, it's almost workshop time too. Next week Saturday I'll be hosting my basic photography class in the new studio. There are a few more spots left and you have until this Sunday the 31st to sign up so Email me if you're interested in coming!

I love photographing older kids. The most requested age that I photograph is newborn to age 2 and I just love it when I get to photograph an older child. When I got the call to photograph this brother and sister and she told me their ages (12 & 13) I didn't have to think twice about it... hmmmmm.... yes please!!!

Downtown Grand Rapids is just FLOODED with people and some of the best art around. If you're in the area you must come see the all pieces September 22 through October 10 and vote for your favorite.

While you're down there, you must check out this piece entered by one of my past wedding clients and their team. Collectively Skated is a pretty cool piece located at Premier Skateboarding on 14 Weston just East of Division. Vote for them - the piece looks incredible!

This little miracle man has officially been walking for one year. 12 months later, we are just as proud of all he's accomplished.

I just love me some newborn goodness! I got a chance to snuggle with this little lady not too long ago and she is just perfect! Check out this full head of hair. Every time I positioned her I had to style her hair as it was just everywhere, it was so sweet!

Not too long ago I met up with this family to capture the love between them. I had the pleasure of photographing them last year and you might remember the post. At that time I had the honor to meet Eric Fox, an amazing man and father who passed away this past April. His spirit and his smile were enough to make you love him. I will never forget Eric and his desire to minister to others despite his illness.

I should have written this post awhile ago but I just couldn't think of the right words to describe this family. They are just absolutely incredible. Their faith, their love and the hope that they have is just amazing. Last weekend I had so much fun photographing Mitch and Audra's wedding. It was a wonderful day with blue skies and sunshine! This couple radiates love and it was so fun capturing their wedding day for them!

Their first dance was incredible! Audra (she has a dance background) and Mitch danced to L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole and it was performed beautifully! Joe and I actually dance to that song for our first dance at our wedding 8 years ago!

There wasn't a dry eye in the room when Audra danced with her dad. It was such a sweet moment!

This wedding just happens to be my last wedding. I've decided that I need to spend more time with my family and from this point on I will be specializing in Senior, Newborns and Childrens portraits. It is definitely hard to give up weddings as I've grown to really enjoy them but my family comes first and this will allow me to spend more of my weekends at home with my hubby and my kids. Brooke is the last of my senior models for the class of 2011. We had a really hard time scheduling this session as our schedules wouldn't work together and it kept raining on the elected date. Finally the date we had we were able to connect but we didn't get much as it was one of the hottest and humid days of the year so far and it started raining just a short time after our session started. What we got in that time was good though!

A little about Brooke in her own words:

I am on an all star cheer team at Allendale Gymnastics Center. I also play softball. I love playing sports. I love children and I babysit all the time. I plan on going to college to become a Child Life Specialist.

Awhile ago I donated the proceeds from my mini sessions to the DeYoung family as they are raising money to head over to Tanzania, Africa to become missionaries. The DeYoung's are still fundraising and Lindsey has come up with a brilliant idea. What a beautiful day Bob and Rachel had last week on their wedding day! That left us so much time to do my favorite types of shoots - urban. We had a blast downtown enjoying the sunshine and warm weather.

I literally gasped when I pulled up to the parish.

Bob and Rachel were married at St. Alphonsus, stunning both on the outside and inside.

The reception was at Notos.

We found these under our deck the other day. Can you guess what bird they come from??

**ANSWER** It's the nest of a Killdeer. Notice how it doesn't make an actual next of twigs and feathers but rather burrows a small hole in the rocks? I find that to be interesting but I'm a real bird lover... :)

Faith and Pizza {Grand Rapids Children's Photographer}

Usually it's "mamma" or "dada" or sometimes even "truck" or "ball". For Trey it was "pizza".

At 30 months Trey's first word is pizza or "tee-ahh" as he proudly says. Every little milestone that Trey reaches is a huge celebration in our house, I mean huge. You should have seen Joe and I shouting and jumping for joy when pizza came out, it was almost ridiculous how we acted. Our celebration was not complete without cheering, high fives, clapping and endless hugs for our little man.

When we first heard it we were all around the dinner table eating an on sale, taste like cardboard, frozen $3 pizza. Joe and I have gotten in the habit of talking about everything with Trey even though he doesn't talk back to us. When "tee-ahh" came out we both sat there stunned. After a minute of collecting ourselves, shouts of celebration rang loud in our house. It's a huge milestone for Trey. It was just so exciting to see Trey "get it" something we've been looking forward to hearing him do for so long now.

Since October when our family received Trey's diagnosis, I've been searching for comfort and the meaning of all of this. After the whole "tee-ahh" scene I've had a revelation and a strong one. I can imagine that when we do something right that our Heavenly Father feels a lot like Joe and I did at Trey's monumental moment of his first word. Can you imagine God doing the same thing when we get something right, when we "get it"? Angels dancing, music playing and God's big smile of approval. Like He's breathing a sigh of relief when we finally understand, when we realize that the bigger picture is not what's here on earth but when were looking onward and upward.

Since "tee-ahh" we've added apple, waffle and hot dog. Pizza is good, but faith is even better.

Whenever I get discouraged I listen to this song by NeedToBreathe (one of my favorite

Christian bands).

I have some amazing friends that are doing amazing things.

Let me introduce you to one of those friends and a fellow photographer... Lindsey DeYoung. Lindsey and her husband Matt have such a huge heart for those that are suffering. Not just sitting back and watching from afar, Matt and Lindsey are heading to Tanzania to care and love for those that have no hope. Partnering with Grace Ministries they hope to raise all the funds needed and head to Tanzania as missionaries with their 2 girls in August. Follow their journey and read their story HERE.

Meet Trisha and Bjorn Olsen. Bjorn and Trisha have been serving as missionaries in Budapest, Hungary for awhile now. Catch up with them HERE. Joe and I have known them for quite some time but have recently become prayer partners and a support system for each other as we both have a child with Cerebral Palsy. Just recently their insurance company has denied their daughter of all her medically necessary therapies. Knowing what this family is going through and how important therapy is for their daughter - this outrages me, and I can't sit back and not help.

Sign up for a half hour time and for $300 you will get 8-15 images on 1 high resolution disk with a print release so you can print your own. Back in Business {Grand Rapids Children's Photographer}

Our house has been sick free this whole Winter.... until last week. I was so sick I could hardly lift a finger. Thankfully though I'm back in business and feeling great and I had a blast shooting this little cutie who just turned two. I just love my clients, especially my repeat clients. Thank you to this family that has seen me a couple of times over the past year. It's been great getting to know all of them and watch them grow!
